Navigating election turbulence with strategies to ensure your business thrives

As South Africa braces itself for the pivotal 2024 elections, the air is thick with uncertainty. South Africa’s political landscape has always had a profound impact on its business environment. Post-election landscapes bring about policy shifts, regulatory changes and economic uncertainties, all of which directly affect businesses’ operations and strategic planning. Although it may feel like a new threat, this angst is felt at every major political juncture and can be successfully navigated with the right information and appropriate planning.

We believe that there are five potential scenarios for the 2024 general elections, where expectations are high that the African National Congress (ANC) will lose its majority for the first time.

  1. If the ANC succeeds in holding a majority, it will be a much smaller majority, but it will be another cycle of business as usual. There is though, an increased risk that a weakened ANC will split, but this will be dependent on the support that the MK Party gets in the election.
  2. If the ANC wins 46–49% of the vote, it will need to partner with smaller political parties to form a coalition to create a majority position. This is most likely to have little impact on policy beyond some token mention of the core message of the selected party and it may be a token appointment or so.
  3. If the ANC wins 40% of the votes, it will be unable to form a large enough coalition with only small political parties. In this instance, the ANC will have to make a fundamental policy direction shift.
  1. If they choose a coalition with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), we could expect that the EFF will push its own agenda and hold the ANC to ransom on key policy decisions. We have seen this behaviour from the EFF at municipal-level coalitions with threats of withdrawing from the coalition or disrupting activities if they do not get their way.
  2. If they decide to make a deal with the Democratic Alliance (DA), it may result in a shift to pro-business and pro-economic growth policies, but it will see the more radical party members inside the ANC jump ship.
  1. The last scenario is the unseating of the ANC and the formation of a multi-party coalition government that will serve the interests of the citizens. This agreement will have to include the DA and the EFF and while their common objective may be to unseat the ANC, there is very little in common in terms of policy direction, so it is likely to follow the instability of the municipal coalitions.

Irrespective of the partners they choose, if the ANC loses its outright majority in parliament, they will most likely lose by a much larger margin in the next election. It is unlikely that any other party will be able to gain an outright majority, so our political future, for at least the next 10 years, will be a bit of a tightrope walk.
